In response to India's growing need to study atmospheric issues, monsoons, and tropical climate during its post-independence development in the 1950s, the World Meteorological Organization recommended establishing meteorological research institutes in tropical countries. Approved by India in 1962 under the Third Five-Year Plan, the Institute of Tropical Meteorology (ITM) was founded on 17 November 1962 in Pune as a unit of the India Meteorological Department.
