The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, was established in April 1988 under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) to enhance forestry research in India. Initially functioning as the Regional Research Centre since 1959, IFGTB now leads national research in forest genetics and tree breeding and addresses regional forestry issues for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
